Medical Laboratory Week, which is being celebrated April 23-29, is a time of recognition for our medical laboratory professionals who interpret more than 2.5 million lab tests at CHI St. Vincent every year.
These medical professionals operate behind the scenes, yet play a vital role in every aspect of health care working 24 hours a day, seven days a week to make sure that nurses, physicians, physician assistants, radiation therapists, dietitians and respiratory therapists have the information necessary to perform their jobs on the front lines.
The patient who gets the results of a biopsy or CBC or hemoglobin A1C from their physician is unaware of the time, talent and expertise of the medical lab technician, medical technologist, pathologist, phlebotomist or histotechnician that processed, analyzed, read and reported the results of their assays. These laboratory professionals are integral partners in the healthcare delivery system, as laboratory test results constituting an estimated 70% of the patient’s medical records which are vital to the diagnosis and treatment of illness and disease.
Lab professionals in the health field are not usually seen, but are always there, working to provide the most accurate results possible to provide excellent quality patient care.
