Scott and Jana Beckman Recognized as Service Heroes at the Infirmary

Congratulations to Scott and Jana Beckman – Float Pool, 4West, for being recognized as Service Heroes at the Infirmary. They put our values into action by demonstrating Reverence, Integrity, Compassion and Excellence after saving a patient’s life by their rapid response, dedication and perseverance. Read a snip from their nomination:

While working late in my office I heard that infamous overhead page, “Code white 4 West.” I quickly grabbed my lab coat and trotted down to see what was the matter. As I passed the nurses station, I noted a nurse at the desk with that too familiar look of panic in her eyes. She was concerned. I entered the room and made a survey and assessment of the patient. The vitals were stable, she had just had surgery earlier in the day. She was quite young and was on pain medication. I quickly began to suspect this was uncontrolled post operative pain and spoke with anesthesia and the care team. I (feeling the issue was addressed) returned to my office. After a few minutes, a text came through…

Sender: “Are you still here?’
Me: “Yes”
Sender: “I’m having the hospitalist come see this pt…she ain’t right. I know everyone is taking this lightly but I’m worried. Care to lend your expertise and help me?”

I grabbed my lab coat again and went to the floor. The family, once at the bedside, now stood in the hall with a sense of concern on their faces. As I entered the room, I saw Jana and Scott Beckman at the bedside comforting the patient and providing essential care. As I looked into the patients eyes for the second time in about an hour, I saw what the Beckman’s saw initially…a patient that was having a very severe post-operative issue. I called a second rapid response on the patient and made a call to the hospitalist team. In my opinion as a 20+ year ICU nurse, I am certain this patient would have passed away immediately if not for their tenacity and persistence.

By the time the patient arrived in critical care, it was well after Jana and Scott Beckman’s shift. I could see on their faces and hear in their voices they were tired after a 12 hour shift, but persevered to care for the most vulnerable among us.

Jana and Scott exhibited our core values in demonstrating…

Reverence-in the depth of respect they demonstrated for this suffering soul.

Integrity-The right thing was done when no one would have known it was not. They genuinely gave of self because it was the right thing to do.

Compassion-In the way they were not willing to hand off the tasks of care to the oncoming team

Excellence-in the clinical intuition Jana displayed, that cannot be taught.

The Beckmans truly “Lived Our Mission.”

I know it is highly irregular to nominate/award two service heroes simultaneously; however, this was a solid team effort to care for a patient. It is without reservation that I nominate Jana and Scott Beckman for a Service Hero Award for their heroic efforts on 4 West.
