Cathi Gray Named Service Hero at Hot Springs
Cathi Gray, Respiratory Therapy at Hot Springs was named a service hero for displaying the value of COMPASSION. A mother submitted a letter on behalf of her son, a victim of an intentional injury sustained while intending to take his own life.
“First response was a deputy sheriff who approached him lying on the ground. He thought if he could just hold on to the sheriff’s pant leg, he could hold onto his life. The sheriff walked away and he lost consciousness. When he arrived in the ER he became alert and again reached out to those working around him. Being busy, they broke free and pulled away. Then Cathi recognized his distress and came to his side, grabbed his hands and held tight. He looked into her eyes and begged, ‘don’t let me go!’ she promised she wouldn’t.
Days later she came to give him a treatment, but he didn’t remember her and didn’t want to wake up. Cathi quietly repeated those calming words, ‘it’s okay son, you’re going to be alright.’ He bolted upright and swiftly turned to her and said, ‘you’re the one who let me hold your hand when I came in, you wouldn’t let me go, I didn’t want to die alone…thank you, thank you for being my angel.’
