DeJuan Daniel Receives Service Hero Award

We’re thrilled to share that DeJuan Daniel, PT, DPT, has been named a CHI St. Vincent Service Hero! DeJuan was recognized for his truly extraordinary work in helping a deaf and blind patient get the service they needed at our hospital. Here’s what his Service Hero nomination said:

Our team encountered a deaf and blind patient that required around the clock assistance from a tactile American Sign Language interpreter. While this is usually a straightforward task to accomplish, it certainly is not during inclement weather.

Several interpreters were secured, but it came with a caveat: someone would need to pick up and drop off each interpreter before the start of their shift and at the end of their shift. This involved venturing out onto iced-over, snowy roads. DeJuan Daniel did not hesitate to come to the rescue when he discovered this patient’s need. DeJuan graciously picked up and dropped off interpreters at all hours ranging from the middle of the night, early morning, mid-day, and in the evening.

Because of DeJuan’s support, this patient, who is blind and deaf, was able to connect with the outside world while being hospitalized. Keep in mind just how scary that could be for a patient who lacks two major senses and is present in an unfamiliar environment. DeJuan’s love for people was certainly evident in this situation.

This is exactly the kind of patient care that we all aspire to at CHI St. Vincent. Thank you, DeJuan, for your endless passion and for being an example to all of us.
