Dr. Thurston Bauer Recognized as Service Hero at the Infirmary

Congratulations to Dr. Thurston Bauer, Cardiologist, for being recognized as a Service Hero at the Infirmary. He put our values into action by demonstrating COMPASSION and EXCELLENCE by traveling to Hot Springs to perform emergency surgery on a patient who wasn’t stable enough to be transported to the Infirmary. Read a snip from his nomination below:

On March 28, a young man was involved in a serious car wreck and transported to our Hot Springs campus for trauma resuscitation. This patient was not doing well and it was identified that this patient was going to need ECMO (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation). Helicopter transport was contacted but the patient was too unstable to transport. After learning of this, Dr. Thurston Bauer decided to take ECMO to the patient. Dr. Bauer was urgently credentialed for our Hot Springs campus while he assembled his operating room (OR) team. This team consisted of personnel from the CVOR crew and a perfusionist, none of which were on call. The team rode in an ambulance to Hot Springs and went with this patient to the OR. The patient was successfully placed on ECMO, while also having his femur fractures pinned, and transported back to the CVICU at the Infirmary. I am nominating Dr. Thurston Bauer for a Service Hero award for his ability to look beyond our walls here at the Infirmary and lead the charge in the attempt to save this patient’s life. Dr. Bauer made heroes out of many people that day!
