Latosha Gulley’s Great Catch Earns Her a Service Hero Award

Congratulations Latosha Gulley, Lead Security Officer at CHI St. Vincent North, for being named a Service Hero!

Latosha was nominated by a coworker for this award by “exhibiting our core values of excellence in everything she does.

While covering a night shift for one of her team members, Latosha noticed a couple of visitors in the Emergency Department walk into the building and quickly leave.

Latosha thought that was suspicious and wanted to be sure that the ED team and patients were okay. Upon arrival she checked in with the staff that alerted her that they were informing patients of their “limited capabilities” and patients were turning away.

Since Latosha had just recently completed an educational refresher on the Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act, EMTALA, she knew this could be viewed as an EMTALA violation and immediately escalated it to her supervisor. EMTALA requires hospitals with emergency departments to provide a medical screening examination to any individual who comes to the emergency department and requests such an examination, and prohibits hospitals with emergency departments from refusing to examine or treat individuals with an emergency medical condition.

“This was a great catch and allowed re-education and follow up with our support team in real time to correct this issue.”
