SNAP Support to Arkansas Hunger Relief Alliance

Mission/Outreach Moment

The Arkansas Hunger Relief Alliance reaches out to families struggling with food insecurity in 75 counties across Arkansas. Many Arkansans are faced, as Arkansas is ranked as having the highest rate of food insecurity in the nation by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). The SNAP Outreach team helps families and individuals apply for SNAP benefits, however there’s a waiting period until benefits “kick in.” Mission/Outreach partnered with the Alliance last year to fill that gap in service, and we are proud to partner again this year! The support from CHI St. Vincent allows the Alliance to give emergency food assistance to nearly 40 families in need while they wait for benefits.

“We continue to dig deeper as a market to address food insecurity bedside, amongst our coworkers, and in our communities, but this work is never done. It’s ongoing work that, if left unaddressed, also leads to poor health outcomes especially in children and the elderly. We’ve committed ourselves to this cause partnering with hunger agencies, launching our own internal programs, looking to pilot potential programs in the near future, and more.”Mandy Davis, Director of Community Outreach

“This money reaches some of the most severe cases of hunger I have ever seen. We reserve these cards for families that express the type of emergency need for food that will move just about anyone into action. People wait for several weeks for SNAP benefits to kick in and in that time, we want to work with the food banks and pantries to make sure that their moment of need is survivable. However, pantries close. People must go home. Unfortunately, some people are in such severe poverty and/or disability that they are not able to get to these resources in time. Because these cards are available, I can go to the store for them and bring families food that has no other means to feed themselves or their family that day. This type of fund means absolutely everything to me and the people we connect this support to. From the entire Alliance team, thank you so much.” –  Parker Blake, SNAP Outreach Manager for AR Hunger Relief Alliance
