Triage Nurse Named Service Hero for Following Her Instincts

We’re happy to share that Misty Stiles, RN, in Hot Springs has been named a CHI St. Vincent Service Hero! Misty has been honored for following her instincts when something seemed not quite right with a young patient. Here’s her nomination:

“A 7-year-old boy was brought in through triage for a fall that resulted in him landing on his head. Misty was the triage nurse and immediately called me to report why he was here and that per his mother, he was not acting right. As the incident did not meet the criteria for a trauma page out, I requested a doctor to go to triage and evaluate the patient. The doctor reported that the patient needed a CT scan but was okay otherwise. Misty was apprehensive and started checking on the patient regularly. She soon called me again and reported that the patient was unresponsive to stimuli. The patient was intubated shortly afterwards, before being rushed to CT and ultimately flown to Children’s. Misty continued to aid this patient and his family beyond triage by holding one of their other smaller children and helping watch the others so the parents could be present during the rapid care that ensued. Thanks to Misty’s dedication and intuition, this patient was able to get the immediate care and attention he needed.”

What an amazing moment, where one nurse made the ultimate difference in a young patient’s care! Thank you, Misty, for listening to that little voice and making sure your patient got the care he ultimately needed.
