A Comforting Heart for Humankindness Honoree

Congratulations to Bryan Flores, RN, of the CCU at the Infirmary, on receiving the Chick-fil-A Humankindness Award for October! Bryan was nominated by a patient’s family who expressed their deep gratitude for the way he cared for their dad and his family at the end of life. Here’s a portion of the nomination:

“My dad was a patient at St. Vincent from Aug 25th through August 30th, in the CCU. In that time we encountered an amazing care team that attempted to do their best to help my dad, to explain things to myself, and the rest of our family so that we could do what we felt was best for him. One of the members of the care team that stood out to me and our family the most in taking care of my dad was Bryan Flores, one of the nurses in the CCU.

“Every time he came into my dad’s room, he was very thorough in his care, very empathetic with my dad’s pain and how he handled him through that, was very helpful in communicating not only what he was doing, with the how and why, but also communicating very clearly when we had any questions at all concerning what was going on with dad. If it was not a question he was able to answer, he very quickly found the resource with the answer and presented it to us. Toward the end of our stay there, when the gravity of the situation finally caught up to us, Bryan went above and beyond even more so than what he had already been doing, to comfort my dad, myself and our family.

“I believe Bryan should be recognized for the outstanding service that he provided to my dad, myself and our family. Something far beyond a typical “atta boy” would be deserving. We honestly could not have made it through this time without him. We all will forever be grateful for this young man. We saw him. We appreciate him. We thank God for him.”

What a testament to the power of care and comfort that all of us can share with our patients and their families. Thank you so much, Bryant, for your work and for helping this family when they needed it most.
