Melissa Spivey Wins Daisy Award
Melissa Spivey, RN, was the December 2016 DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses winner at CHI St. Vincent. Melissa is a nurse on Cardiovascular Step Down at the Infirmary.
Here’s an excerpt from her nomination letter:
“She’s got it all! I realize you are asking for a specific situation with this nomination, but it is because of everything she did I am writing about this nurse. She attended to all of the little things my mom needed assistance with as though they were the most important things and her only concern she had at that time. Mom lost use of her right arm following her second stroke that happened the day after her surgery. Being right handed, she needed a lot of assistance with basic things such as eating, using the restroom, transferring in and out of bed. She assisted her with dignity and respect. She responded promptly and always acted out of love. She cared for my mom as though she were her mom. Excellent nurse!”
The DAISY Award was established by the DAISY Foundation in memory of J. Patrick Barnes who died at 33 of ITP, an auto-immune disease. The Barnes Family was awestruck by the clinical skills, caring and compassion of the nurses who cared for Patrick, so they created this national award to say thank you to nurses everywhere.
