Quit Smoking in the “Great American Smokeout”

Every year, The American Cancer Society sponsors the Great American Smokeout on the third Thursday of November, and this year that lands on November 16, 2023. The day is set aside to challenge smokers to give up cigarettes for 24 hours.

ACS created this day with the hopes that smokers quitting for one day will lead to them never smoking again. This day is also to educate the public on how smoking can lead to death and chronic illnesses.

Quitting smoking isn’t easy and it takes time, but why not start with one day and make it a plan? If you or someone you know uses tobacco, use this day as a stepping stone toward a healthier life.

Be on the lookout for handouts and resources to support you on your journey.

Did you know in 1987 Mr. Potato Head gave up his cherished pipe during the 11th Great American Smokeout? He then became the “spokespud” for the Great American Smokeout. He actually traded his dapper hat for a green baseball cap and exchanged his loafers for blue tennis shoes. Way to go Mr. Potato Head!
