Shelby Ragland Wins Daisy Award
Shelby Ragland, RN, was the April 2017 DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses winner at CHI St. Vincent. Shelby is a nurse on CVICU at the Infirmary.
Here’s an excerpt from her nomination letter:
“My father-in-law was admitted with a self-inflicted wound. Our whole family was devastated and shocked. This nurse was our nurse for two days. We told her this story on admission so that the person she sees is not the man we treasure. After being married for 66 years, his wife died and we suspect it was more than he could take. This nurse treated him with respect and joy and even to us she showed as much caring as we could wish her to show. She is the type of person God uses to help heal broken hearts and broken bodies. We will always remember this admission and the nurse who helped put a band-aid on our hearts.”
The DAISY Award was established by the DAISY Foundation in memory of J. Patrick Barnes who died at 33 of ITP, an auto-immune disease. The Barnes Family was awestruck by the clinical skills, caring and compassion of the nurses who cared for Patrick, so they created this national award to say thank you to nurses everywhere.
