Watermelons: A Little Taste of Summer Sunshine!
Watermelon can not only bring out the smiles in the Arkansas heat, but the juicy fruit also has its benefits to our bodies! We must stay hydrated to function properly.
Did you know a few slices of watermelon can be equivalent to drinking an extra glass of water? Watermelon is 92% water, and has been considered a cooling food. National Watermelon Month is celebrated in July. How cool is that? No pun intended! I mean it really is a “cooling” food.
Watermelon tastes sweet and refreshing, but it’s also very healthy. It contains a variety of nutrients, including potassium, magnesium, and vitamins A and C. Mother Nature has watermelon deemed as a summer harvested food, which tends to be higher in the carbohydrates and natural sugars that fuel our bodies for extra activities. Watermelon is rich in the amino acid called citrulline, which may give us the extra boost and improve our performance while exercising.
Another added benefit is watermelon has a high water content and low calorie density, which can make you feel full. This tasty treat is also relatively low in calories at 46 calories per cup. So, you can enjoy this delicious and refreshing fruit without the guilt.
Most of us just grab slices of watermelon for a snack, but it can be added to smoothies, salsa, salad and stir-fry. This versatile fruit has a sweetness that people often enjoy with their protein snack of cheese and nuts.
Enjoy your summer and grab a watermelon next time you’re getting groceries!
