We’re Celebrating Nurses Week by Highlighting Their Great Work

William Hezel, a nurse on 3N at the Infirmary, received the February Daisy Award.

A patient nominated William for his “sweet, kind and caring actions,” including sharing how he ran down the hall to ensure the patient got their nausea medicine prior to a procedure.

In another example, the patient recalled how William made sure the patient’s meal plan was updated after they had been on liquids for four days. The patient’s doctor had left, and the hospitalist wanted to continue the liquid diet until the physician returned in the morning. William worked with the other specialist and got the patient the food she wanted.

“This nurse was so on top of every need he thought I had before I even thought of it. …He sat down eye level and sympathized with me and my situation more than once.”

The DAISY Award was established by the DAISY Foundation in memory of J. Patrick Barnes who died at 33 of ITP, an auto-immune disease. The Barnes Family was awestruck by the clinical skills, caring and compassion of the nurses who cared for Patrick, so they created this national award to say thank you to nurses everywhere.
