Humankindness Shown in Help for Out-of-State Homeless Patient

Congratulations to Jessica Miller, MSW, CCSW, at the Infirmary on receiving the Chick-fil-A Humankindness Award! This special honor recognizes St. Vincent team members who take extraordinary measures to help someone. Here’s what a coworker had to say about a recent event where Jessica stepped up in a big way:

“Going the extra mile is an understatement of Jessica’s mission to being a social worker. A vulnerable patient was 300+ miles away from home. Disoriented and left homeless in Little Rock with no family contacts, no phone, or access to their finances, one would think there is nothing that could be done to help this patient. However, Jessica managed to identify next of kin and made contact with the patient’s family, government agencies to corroborate the patient’s circumstances that left him stranded, and got him placed somewhere close to home so that he could get the mental healthcare he needed, along with providing the patient with information he needs so that others could help him along his journey. The amount of gratitude the patient had was unmeasurable. You could see the weight of fear and uncertainty be lifted. Knowing when he left the ER he would be in a safe place is a reflection of Jessica’s dedication to patient care and CommonSpirit’s mission. ‘“’At CommonSpirit Health, we make the healing presence of God known in our world by improving the health of the people we serve, especially those who are vulnerable, while we advance social justice for all.'”
