Infirmary Team Presented with Service Hero Award

Congratulations to Joy Mason, Jimina Long and Bret Calcagno for being recognized as Infirmary service heroes in October 2022.

The team was nominated by a coworker for their compassion, inclusion, integrity, excellence and collaboration.

Back in June, a patient in the emergency department called a nurse to his room. When she responded, the patient began attacking her. Joy Mason, nurse, and Jimina Long, ED tech, heard her screams and immediately took action. Joy got the young nurse away from the patient, and Jimina was able to restrain him.

While Jimina was holding the patient down, he was biting both of her arms. Thankfully, Bret Calcagno, RN, came to their aid. Bret was able to release Jimina and restrain the patient until officers arrived.

Joy, Jimina, Bret and the rest of the ED crew then took the young nurse who was attacked and began providing care to one of their own.

“Bret was able to think clearly enough to notify the proper authorities while ensuring that all involved were receiving the kind of medical treatment and support they needed as he was serving as charge nurse for that shift,” said the coworker who submitted the nomination.

Thank you to Joy, Jimina and Bret for your bravery and service!

“Without the quick and effective response from these teammates, our young nurse’s traumatic attack could have had a much worse result. The entire ED family is grateful for their actions of selflessness and compassion on that day that, we believe, truly saved a life.”
