We’re Celebrating Nurses Week by Highlighting Their Great Work
Jeffrey Manikham, RN in CVICU, received a DAISY Award at the Infirmary. Following is an excerpt from his nomination:
In the CVICU, we are fortunate that our patients often have short stays within our unit. It is rare that we get a long-term patient. In this case, a patient was in our unit for over 80 days. He was this patient’s caregiver for more than 35 of those nights. As this patient’s condition grew more chronic, many of us burned out and experienced compassion fatigue. Jeffrey persisted. He was very friendly with the patient, showing reverence to the patient, his family and his condition. He displayed integrity by doing what was needed to be done to ensure this patient had the best care he could provide. He showed compassion with his genuinely concern for the well-being of this patient. He showed excellence throughout the 35+ days as the caregiver of this patient and on more than one occasion, he kept this patient alive and stable. The patient has passed recently after a long complicated path. On speaking with the nurse, he once again showed reverence, integrity, compassion and excellence in speaking of the patient’s passing.
The DAISY Award was established by the DAISY Foundation in memory of J. Patrick Barnes who died at 33 of ITP, an auto-immune disease. The Barnes Family was awestruck by the clinical skills, caring and compassion of the nurses who cared for Patrick, so they created this national award to say thank you to nurses everywhere.
