Mammovan Provides Free Breast Screenings at East Clinic
Fifteen women had free mammograms at our East Clinic on October 1, the first day of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
The women might not otherwise have had a mammogram. All patients served at this clinic, one of five in our CHI St. Vincent Community Care networks, qualify as low-income. Typically, services are provided on a sliding scale discount based on Federal Poverty Guidelines.
On October 1, the mammograms were provided completely free of any charges and included free educational programs on cancer prevention and breast health.
Our mission includes caring for the poor and medically underserved in our community within and outside our hospital walls. Taking the van to the clinic is just one way we’re making our mission come to life.
A 2015 Susan G. Komen Foundation grant provides 50 free or reduced cost mammograms. CHI St. Vincent will continue to provide free mammograms when funds for the 50 are spent.
The van has digital imaging equipment, waiting and changing areas, and a patient consultation and education area. Mammogram visits are coordinated through local organizations, churches and clinics.
