New Lab Equipment Made Possible by Our Foundation
The Infirmary’s Laboratory has added the Cary Series UV-Vis Spectrophotometer to their inventory of instruments thanks to a grant that was made available by our Foundation.
“We are so grateful to Laura Cook, her team, and the Foundation that work to make advances like this possible,” commented Bobby Abbott, Market Director of Laboratory Services.
The laboratory is using the spectrophotometer platform to test for Plasma free hemoglobin. The detection of plasma free hemoglobin is an especially important diagnostic observation for our cardiology patients who are supported with extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) or ventricular assist devices (VADs) and are at risk for potential elevation of plasma-free hemoglobin (pfHb) during treatment. This pfHb testing also allows detection of sub-clinical events with avoidance of propagating injury to the patient.
