Paula Lowery Receives Hot Springs DAISY Award

Paula Lowery, a nurse-Patient Care Coordinator in SICU at Hot Springs, received the December DAISY Award.

Paula was nominated for the care she provided to a patient who was unresponsive upon his arrival at the hospital.

Because no ICU rooms were available, the patient was kept in ED while a bronchoscopy was ordered.

Paula and another ICU nurse came to assist with the procedure. The patient’s blood pressure was very low, and the patient was placed on multiple pressors and different sedation ordered.

Paula stayed with the patient for the entire six hours they were in the ED because she knew it was in the best interest of the patient to be cared for by a nurse who had experience with all the medications being administered. She also used the opportunity to teach her coworkers about arterial lines and administering multiple pressors.

The patient’s family was in and out, and she was comforting them, asking questions and getting to know her patient through their answers. Thank you to this nurse, not only for her kindness and excellent care she gave our patient but for your professionalism and kindness you showed your fellow nurses.

The DAISY Award was established by the DAISY Foundation in memory of J. Patrick Barnes who died at 33 of ITP, an auto-immune disease. The Barnes Family was awestruck by the clinical skills, caring and compassion of the nurses who cared for Patrick, so they created the national award to thank nurses everywhere.
