Hot Springs RN Honored for Quick Actions That Saved Patient

We’d like to extend our congratulations to Kayla Lewis, RN, at the Emergency Department in Hot Springs on being named a
CHI St. Vincent Service Hero! Kayla was honored after her quick thinking and expert actions helped provide a positive outcome for a patient. Here’s what one of her coworkers had to say about her:

“Kayla was caring for a 35-year-old patient admitted for CHF and elevated troponin. Just before the patient was transferred upstairs for admission, she went to check on him one last time. She found the patient cold and diaphoretic, and was initially unable to obtain a blood pressure reading. Kayla immediately called for help, checked vital signs, performed an EKG and a fingerstick blood sugar test and notified the PA. Because the patient was an inpatient hold, she also immediately called a rapid response. The patient’s glucose was found to be 29 and promptly treated. Notably, the patient had no history of diabetes, and his initial glucose that morning was in the 90s. The patient’s transfer to the floor was cancelled and upgraded to ICU stepdown for closer monitoring and investigation. Kayla’s final check and rapid assessment directly changed the outcome for this patient. Please help me in recognizing her for her outstanding care and attentiveness.”

Wonderful work and quick thinking, Kayla! Thanks to your thoroughness and your cool head under pressure, a patient who might have suffered a negative outcome got the treatment he needed. Well done!

Kayla’s nomination came from a fellow team member, which is something that you can do, too! If you know of a coworker who has gone the extra mile, nominate them to be a CHI St. Vincent Service Hero by clicking this link and filling out the form.
