Colt Atkins, an LPN on 4West at the Infirmary, was named a Service Hero for displaying the value of COMPASSION and INTEGRITY.
Colt was nominated for the compassion he showed the husband of a patient. The wife’s condition was continuing to deteriorate, despite the efforts of the multidisciplinary team.
“Colt went above and beyond to show compassion and integrity giving this gentleman as much time as he needed to understand the complex nature of his wife’s condition.
With continued conversations, the husband began to understand his wife’s outlook, and although he was not ready for hospice, he was at peace that the nursing staff was doing everything to make his wife comfortable.
When Colt was thanked for the care, time and attention he gave the gentleman, he said,“That’s what we are called to do. That is what we all should do.” He never let the care of his other patients be affected by the time he spent with this patient and family, yet went above and beyond to ensure this patient and her husband were taken care of.”
