Rachel Stauder Receives July 2017 Daisy Award

Rachel Stauder, RN for the Hot Springs Float Pool, was nominated for a Daisy Award because of her dedication to make sure her patient’s family are just as taken care of as the patient was. Read a snip from her nomination:

I would like to nominate this nurse for living our core values and serving not only our patients but their families wholeheartedly. Often in our department, the patient’s family can’t leave their side, but also can’t financially afford to be here. If they aren’t eating, she buys them a meal. It’s just normal for her to do for others. On one occasion, she had a young patient with a terminal prognosis and the patient’s sister came from an hour away to be with her. Rachel noticed that she wasn’t eating, and that she looked very tired. She took the time to talk with the sister and learned that she was afraid to leave, and that if she went home she wouldn’t have enough gas to return. She bought her a meal and found her a place to shower so she could feel more comfortable. Then she talked to her charge nurse that day about the situation and the charge nurse and a few others immediately donated to the cause. They were able to give the sister enough money for gas and some extra for whatever else she may need while here. She was so proud of her coworkers, but didn’t think to mention her part in it. When I rounded on the patient, she told me with tears in her eyes how much the nurse cared not only for her but also for her sister. The patient said that she could rest knowing that her sister had that support.

The DAISY Award was established by the DAISY Foundation in memory of J. Patrick Barnes who died at 33 of ITP, an auto-immune disease. The Barnes Family was awestruck by the clinical skills, caring and compassion of the nurses who cared for Patrick, so they created this national award to say thank you to nurses everywhere.
