Make Someone’s Day In Just One Minute

Any expression of gratitude is worthwhile, but in an age of digital dominance, handwritten thank-you notes are extra special.
When was the last time you received a written note of thanks? You may have to think back quite a while. Instantaneous communications, such as text messages and emails, can make paper notes seem outdated and obsolete. Nothing could be further from the truth—they’re timeless expressions, and their increasing rarity makes them all the more meaningful.
Imparting Part of You
A handwritten thank-you note is exceptional because it takes time and thought to produce. It signifies to the recipient that you cared enough to pause your day, put pen to paper, and convey how much that person’s act of kindness meant to you. In short, you give more than a note—you give a little piece of yourself.
“In today’s world, it is rare to receive anything handwritten,” said Katie Van Buren, manager recruitment, CHI National Office. “To know that someone took time out of a hectic day to send a personal message of thanks is special.”
Composing a thank-you note can be just as enriching as receiving one.
“Writing thank-you notes was an expectation set for me by my parents at a very early age,” Katie said. “It was non-negotiable for any occasion. I love to send a note of thanks to colleagues, coworkers and team members to let them know how much I appreciate them and truly value the work that they do. It is as much a gift for me to send as I hope it is for them
to receive!”
Take Note
Use these tips to craft an effective thank-you note:
-
Write your note on special stationery.
-
Have a little fun—and show the recipient that you put a lot of effort into the note—by trying your hand at calligraphy.
-
Personalize the note by addressing the recipient by name, mentioning the specific deed for which you’re grateful and conveying why it was important to you.
-
Write promptly, while the recipient’s kindness is fresh in your mind.
-
Convey your gratitude in a few lines of meaningful, well-chosen words.
-
Don’t include jokes unless you’re certain the recipient will understand them and find them funny.
-
Sign off with “sincerely” for most thank-you notes, but feel free to use a more personal closing with loved ones.
