LaValeria Saxton-Smith Chosen as CHI St. Vincent’s First Blackwell Distinguished Woman in Medicine Award Recipient

The CHI St. Vincent Women in Medicine group recently handed out the first CHI St. Vincent Blackwell Distinguished Woman in Medicine award.

The award was given to LaValeria Saxton-Smith, practice manager for the East Clinic.

The award is named after Dr. Elizabeth Blackwell, the first woman to earn a medical degree in the U.S. Dr. Blackwell continues to be a symbol of the advancements women have made in medicine, and also brings to light the discrimination and inequities women still face today in medicine.

The CHI St. Vincent Women in Medicine group is made of of women providers within our ministry. They hope to continue this award each February and give it to women who have helped make advances for women’s medical care, but also to level out the inequities in health care.
